BERA Test
Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response - Assess hearing pathway function
What is BERA Test?
Brainstem Auditory Evoked Response (BERA) is an objective hearing test that measures the electrical activity in the auditory nerve and brainstem in response to sound. It's especially useful for testing infants, young children, and individuals who cannot participate in conventional hearing tests.
How It Works
The Process
- • Electrodes placed on scalp and behind ears
- • Click sounds played through headphones
- • Brain's electrical response recorded
- • Test takes 20-45 minutes
- • Patient should be relaxed or asleep
What We Measure
- • Hearing sensitivity at specific frequencies
- • Integrity of hearing pathway
- • Brainstem function
- • Retrocochlear pathology
- • Neural synchrony and latency
Why BERA Test?
Objective Results
No behavioral response needed - direct measurement of brain activity
Accurate for Infants
Ideal for testing newborns and very young children
Diagnostic Tool
Detects various hearing disorders and auditory pathway issues
Who Needs BERA?
- • Newborns for hearing screening
- • Infants and young children who can't cooperate with behavioral tests
- • Suspected auditory nerve disorders
- • Neurological conditions affecting hearing
- • Developmental delay with hearing concerns
- • Post-meningitis or infection hearing loss
